She obtained her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Oxford before becoming a professor of cognitive developmental psychology at the University College London. Goswami then went on to receive her Post Graduate Certificate of Education from the University of London in primary education allowing her to become a teacher. In 1987 she received her D. Phil (Oxford's term for a Ph.D.) in developmental psychology from the University of Oxford with her main topics being reading and spelling by analogy. She then began her career working as a professor of Cognitive Developmental Psychology at the Institute of Child Health, University College London.
